Dragon Age: The Veilguard has broken records only a few hours after the game’s release.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the fourth instalment in the Bioware franchise was released on the 31st of October. According to SteamDB, a site that tracks Steam data, the game reached more than 70k concurrent players within its first 24 hours of sale, breaking the record for a Bioware game. Mass Effect Legendary Edition held the previous record after it launched in May 2021 with a peak of 59.8k concurrent players. However, Veilguard couldn’t quite beat out some of EA’s highest titles such as The Sims 4 which holds a peak of 96k.

It should also be noted that EA did not release games on Steam between 2011 and 2019 choosing to favour its own store (known as Origin and then the EA app). This means it is near impossible to rank the game against other Bioware debuts that were released during that time such as Dragon Age: Inquisition the third instalment in the franchise which was released back in 2014.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard picks up 10 years after Inquisition left off with Solas beginning a ritual to tear down the barrier to the fade, letting all manner of demons loose in the world of Thedas. As with previous Dragon Age instalments, players design their own character – here known by the moniker of ‘Rook’ and gather a gang of wayward companions in a quest to save the world.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
