The one-woman show Darkie Armo Girl, written and performed by Karine Bedrossian, will have its world premiere at the Finborough Theatre in June.
Based on a true story, the play explores Karine Bedrossian’s devastating ancestral past and how she survives life with the innocence of a child, but the destructive self-abandon of a suicide bomber.
Beginning in 1974, an Armenian family arrive in the UK with only £35, a suitcase and the address of a relative after fleeing the civil war. Two years later, the leading character Karin Bedrossian is born and leads a fine life, growing up in Richmond, Surrey. However, behind the perfect exterior there lies a dark secret which haunts her every move. When she reaches 18 years old, she is homeless, penniless, and her only friends are heroin addicts and criminals. She then makes the drastic decision to become a pop star, hoping to turn her life around. This way, she would gain respect from those around her and thus be whole. But will this change be that simple?
The play is directed by Anastasia Bunce and presented by Where’s Betty Productions in association with Neil McPherson for the Finborough Theatre.
The four week limited season begins on 14 June 2022 with press nights on 16 and 17 June at 7.30pm. On 22 June and 29 June, audience members will also have the opportunity to join a free Q&A session with Bedrossian and Bunce, taking place in the theatre auditorium.
