Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy has joined the cast of Netflix’s hit comedy-drama Sex Education for its fourth season.

Levy is one of seven new cast members who will be joining as series regulars, including Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther and newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James and Imani Yahshua.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that the Emmy winner will be playing the role of Mr. Molloy, a famous author who is also the college tutor of one of the leading characters, Maeve. Details about the roles played by series newcomers Graham, Reuther, Mufti, Lexa, James and Yahshua are yet to be revealed.

Set in a British secondary school, the series follows the journey of a group of students as they navigate through the complicated period of adolescence. With each episode, we see characters contend with various personal and sexual dilemmas from academic stress and relationship intimacy to more serious themes of sexual assault and abortion.

The show has received a lot of praise for its progressive portrayal of teenage sexuality, opening up conversations surrounding topics that are generally considered taboo such as STIs and fetishes. Its third season was particularly commended by the LGBT+ community for its inclusive representation of lesser-known sexualities and gender identities.

The upcoming series will continue to amplify marginalised voices by expanding its diverse cast to include two new trans characters. A casting call was posted on Twitter by non-binary writer Krishna Istha, looking for actors to play the roles of a young trans woman named Abbi and her trans-masculine boyfriend Kent.

As viewers will recall, the season three finale also dropped some major bombshells, with Maeve announcing she would be leaving for America and that Moordale Secondary School would be closing down. Questions surrounding Otis and Maeve’s relationship are left up in the air and many fans are left wondering how their relationship will progress and what will happen to the rest of the Moordale students now that their school has closed.

Further details about the fourth season are kept under wraps, however, series favourites Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie and Samantha Spiro will also be making their highly anticipated return.
