ANTS is a delightful comedy about the ludicrousness of the business world. Originated by graduates of Leed’s University, Junk Theatre exude professionalism as a company. It’s evident that the production team and cast have worked in harmony to put this show together. The play’s title and anonymous character names help to express how these characters are just faceless cogs in the corporate machine. However, this play delivers an emotive insight into the lives and stories behind these “cogs”, portrayed by three very strong actors. Olivia Moon and Joel David provide the comedic narcissism expected from business workers, whereas Anna Van Miert provides an endearing middle ground.
The play begins by thrusting the audience into a high-pressure office setting. I was extremely impressed by the set design, especially in the second half of the performance. The first act adds a slow burn feel to the piece, which allows the audience to get to know the characters. However, in the second act, the stage embodies a vision of chaos and destruction to express the disjointed minds of the characters. This is achieved with detritus like Red Bull cans and screwed up paper strewn everywhere, combined with manic scrawlings covering every surface of the set. The change in energy in Act Two is captivating; it’s so enjoyable to watch the actors transform into a state of panic and delirium. The powerful and intimate direction in the second act is evident. It’s impressive to see the true levels of emotion each character can reach—they really step it up in a hilarious yet heartfelt fashion.
The actors’ monologues in Act Two were powerful and relatable, focusing on harsh subjects such as financial struggles, backgrounds of hardship and the mounting pressure to provide for your family. I think all audiences can resonate with these themes in some way, which is exactly what you aim to do when producing a theatre show. ANTS aims to express how you never truly know what’s going on behind someone’s bravado.
This enigmatic production is an all-round success for Junk Theatre. George Manson’s scriptwriting is truly impressive, showing professionalism and talent beyond his years. I hope ANTS continues to be performed and adapted for many years to come.
