Miguel Sapochnik has announced he will be stepping down as co-showrunner of HBO’s recently recommissioned House of the Dragon after the conclusion of the first series. Ryan Condal will now serve as the show’s sole showrunner and will continue to collaborate closely with George R.R. Martin (series co-creator and author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels which inspired the show).
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter addressing his choice to leave House of the Dragon Sapochnik said, “It was incredibly tough to decide to move on, but I know that it is the right choice for me, personally and professionally. As I do so, though, I am deeply comforted to know that Alan [Taylor] will be joining the series. He’s someone I’ve known and respected for a long time, and I believe this precious series could not be in safer hands.”
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sapochnik has entered into a first-look deal with HBO to develop a new project and will remain attached to House of the Dragon albeit in a reduced capacity as an executive producer for the duration of the series.
The production has also announced that the Emmy-winning director of The Sopranos, Mad Men, and seven episodes of Game of Thrones, Alan Taylor will join the team for the second season.
Taylor told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s a pleasure and an honour to be back at HBO, immersing myself in the world of the Targaryens … I look forward to working closely with Ryan [Condal] as House of the Dragon grows into its second season. … Returning to Westeros will be a huge undertaking and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
House of the Dragon continues in the UK on the 12 August 2022 at 2am on Sky Atlantic.
