Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) and Callum Scott Howells (It’s a Sin) are set to star in the BBC’s bold new Welsh drama, The Way.
The ambitious three part drama will follow the Driscolls, an ordinary family who, having been swept up in extraordinary circumstances, are forced to flee their home in a small industrial town due to a quickly spiralling civil uprising. Ripped from the certainty of their old lives and thrust into the unknown, the Driscolls are caught up in an impossible power struggle that triggers a chain of events leaving them facing life, death, and survival.
The Driscoll family will be played by Howells, Sheen and Stefan Rhodri (Gavin and Stacey), alongside Mali Harries (Keeping Faith) and Sophie Melville (The Pact). Maja Laskowska has also joined the cast as a young woman who becomes entangled with the family. Meanwhile, Evans will play the mercenary, Hogwood, who is in pursuit of the Driscolls as they attempt to escape the country.
They must grapple with ghosts of their pasts, the loss of their homeland, and impossible choices. Billed as an “emotional and darkly humorous story,” it tackles the topical subjects of identity and belonging, drawing inspiration from the current “social and political chaos of today’s world,” the BBC has said.
Michael Sheen will be making his directorial debut, whilst also producing and starring in the show. Written by James Graham, creator of ITV drama Quiz, which starred Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen. It is also co-created by Sheen, Graham and Adam Curtis. Filming for the show has just begun in Port Talbot.
The show will be produced by Red Seam in association with Little Door Productions, and will air on both BBC One and iPlayer. There is currently no release date.
