BUP! Festival is set to make history as the first ever British Sign Language (BSL) fully inclusive arts festival in Medway this October. Promising a day of activities, films and performances, the festival has been curated for Deaf children and their families.
Organised by D-Live!, a company that has supported Deaf individuals and their families in Medway for the last four years, the festival aims to counteract the high volume of Deaf children behind their school peers in language development and engagement with reading. As 90% of deaf children have hearing parents and many have never met a deaf adult, the festival aims to inspire attendees by showcasing positive Deaf adult role models.
Held at the Sun Pier House on 1 and 2 October, BUP! Festival will celebrate its inclusivity and accessibility for all audiences through a targeted programme of events which encourage improved literacy among Deaf children.
Co-founder and artistic director of BUP! Festival Steven Vevers-Webb commented: “We’re passionate about deaf children and their families being able to go to Festivals without any language barriers or access needs.”
“We are already in the discussion stage for the first of many festivals starting with another BUP! Festival in two years’ time with an expansion festival programme around Medway. Look forward to seeing you there. Spread the sign!”
