Brett Goldstein has joined the cast of the Apple TV+ show Shrinking. The co-creator and executive producer of the show is set to guest star in season two, with the details of his role being kept under wraps.
Goldstein is best known for his well-loved performance as Roy Kent in the beloved football comedy Ted Lasso. He also created and hosts the Films To Be Buried With podcast, where he interviews celebrity guests about their favourite films of all time.
Shrinking was created by Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Segel, and produced by Kip Kroeger. The first season follows grieving therapist Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) as he struggles to cope with the sudden death of his wife. Jimmy begins to breach ethical barriers when speaking to his patients and becomes intimately involved in some of their lives, particularly Sean (Luke Tennie), a veteran dealing with anger issues.
The series also follows Jimmy’s attempts to repair his strained relationship with his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell), with the help of his friend and mentor Paul (Harrison Ford). As well as Paul, Jimmy often seeks advice from his other colleague Gaby, (Jessica Williams), and his best friend Brian (Michael Urie), but usually chooses to ignore their attempts to help.
Other notable characters include Jimmy’s well-meaning neighbour Liz (Christa Miller), her husband Derek (Ted McGinley), and Grace (Heidi Gardner), one of Jimmy’s patients who is stuck in an abusive relationship. Grace’s struggles resulted in the jaw-dropping cliffhanger of the first season, providing plenty of exciting avenues for the series to explore.
The series received widespread critical acclaim after its debut in January 2023, with both Jason Segel and Jessica Williams receiving Emmy nominations for their respective roles as Lead Actor and Supporting Actress.
Segel, Lawrence and Goldstein recently revealed that the show has a planned three-season arc, and will likely follow two more years of Jimmy’s life.
Whilst season two of Shrinking is currently in production, you can stream the first season on Apple TV+.
