Title: Ice Cream Girls

Author: Dorothy Koomson

What I think so far: If I made New Year’s Resolutions, mine would definitely have been to read more novels of the crime and mystery genre. Whilst on the outside, Ice Cream Girls looks a bit fluffy and full of delight, it really isn’t. I’m only a quarter of the way through and my jaw has dropped about four times. Koomson splits the narrative between Serena Gorringe and Poppy Carlisle, two women connected by the murder of a history teacher that occurred in their teens. A murder of which they themselves were accused. The story begins upon Poppy’s release from jail, after being sentenced for the murder whilst Serena had been allowed to walk free and is preparing to remarry her husband. It becomes apparent within the narrative that not all is as it seems; was Poppy the true killer? Or is Serena hiding her crime? Although this seems extremely predictable, Koomson presents a story that could easily whip out a plot twist and leave the reader confused and shocked – for that reason I believe I won’t be putting this book down until I’ve read every page.

Would I recommend? I would. If I hadn’t received this as a Christmas gift, I probably never would have picked it up from the shelf. So if like me you’re exploring new genres, Ice Cream Girls would be an excellent choice.
