Title: Hush, Hush

Author: Becca Fitzpatrick

What I think so far: I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem in my ‘to read’ pile. I hadn’t heard much about this book before reading it and was unsure what to expect, but it soon became apparent that I was embarking on a mystery I simply had to solve! Hush, Hush is the first of four books which follows sixteen year old Nora Grey as she enters an intense romance with fallen angel Patch, a relationship complicated further by Patch’s seemingly darker motivations. The chemistry between them is electric and almost consumes the reader as the pair are forced to confront their conflicting emotions.

The twisting narrative is full of mystery and intrigue, leaving readers hanging on every printed word. Cleverly placed breadcrumbs throughout the chapters only add to the suspense, making this an exhilaratingly fast paced read. But mystery is not all this book has to offer; Fitzpatrick supplies an interesting mix of personalities meaning witty exchanges between characters, often leaving me with a smile on my face. Nora stood out as a refreshing female lead, and although she exhibits weakness, events throughout the novel display her clear strength of character – a rare combination within young adult fiction, especially within such an early installment of the series. I am now left with an undeniable urge to continue with the Hush, Hush series; this first installment was not only enjoyable but has left me desperate to continue reading Becca Fitzpatrick’s exquisite creation.

Would I recommend: Yes! Particularly if you enjoy young adult fantasy/romance, it is very easy to become immersed in this book and feel compelled to keep turning the pages until there simply are none left to turn.

Rating: 7/10
