Book By My Bedside: Dracula // Bram Stoker

Title: Dracula

Author: Bram Stoker

What I Think So Far: The book is very typical of its era, and it definitely bears no resemblance to the modern gore associated with vampires. The gentlemen are gentlemen, the women are swooning, and the minorities are discretely frowned upon. Ignoring all the archaisms though, likeable features of this classic can be found. The writing style is varied and individual in the sense that it is comprised of letters, journal entries, telegraphs and newspaper inserts. There are a range of characters, locations and events that intertwine to bring the story together with, of course, Dracula at the centre of it all. At nearly halfway through, the plot has been engaging and well thought out (if not a bit too lengthy) with a variety of incidents that keep a reader engaged.

Would I Recommend?: If your taste in novels includes the classics, and you’re not put off by lengthy books, then definitely give this a try. It provides an interesting read, if not just to see how the most famous and quintessential vampire was originally created (spoiler: he has a moustache).
