Amongst all the cryptic messages and teasers surrounding the upcoming new season of Doctor Who, a new spoiler has been revealed.
This season, in particular, has been the most anticipated for a long time. It has graced us the return of many beloved characters, including David Tennant reliving his role as The 10th Doctor, alongside former companion Donna Noble. Moreover, anticipation of thorough stories resolving this Doctor’s complicated relationship regarding his regeneration coming back to haunt him.
Fans are in for an even greater surprise after being bombarded with this news — the iconic Bonnie Langford will return to play the role of Mel Bush. The companion, of course, served as assistant to both Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor and Colin Baker’s Doctor.
Langford went on to appear in the final episode of Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation, which saw a slew of iconic faces from both past Doctor and companions alike. She also appeared alongside her former Doctors, which was an appreciated nod to their times together.
The companion will now take the screen alongside her fourth Doctor in the series as she has is expected to join the 15th incarnation, played by Ncuti Gatwa He is set to take centre stage in the series after Tennant’s brief re-entry into the franchise and its become further assured (through showrunner Russell T Davies) that Bonnie won’t be just the representing a nod to yesteryear; she will be a fully-fledged main constant in the new show.
Speaking to Deadline, Davies states she will be “in the thick of the action, battling monsters and chaos”. It will be fascinating to see what he plans to do with her reintegration. Which hasn’t become attempted since the likes of Sarah Jane (played by the late Elisabeth Sladen).
Bonnie also spoke to Deadline, saying she is “thrilled to be bringing Melanie Bush back.” She also seemed incredibly excited about working with Davies, whom she hasn’t yet had the pleasure of acting for.
Doctor Who will return for the 60th anniversary in November this year.
