British Comedy Guide has announced that the BBC sitcom Ghosts will be returning for a fifth season.

It has been reported that the show’s creators are currently working on scripts for further episodes ahead of a third Christmas special that will air next month.

Ghosts follows the misadventures of Alison and Mike Cooper, a young married couple who inherit an old country manor from a distant relative. However, unbeknownst to them, the house is haunted by ghosts from various historical eras.

The series is written and performed by the main cast of the CBBC hit comedy series Horrible Histories: Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. All of the troupe are set to resume their roles in the upcoming series alongside Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Lolly Adefope.

Last series saw the departure of one of the show’s series regulars, Katy Wix who played Mary, the ghost of witch trial victim. Her exit came suddenly when, just minutes into the fourth episode, a flash of golden light appears and she ascends into the afterlife – or rather “sucked off.”

Following her exit, there has been speculation whether other characters would follow in her footsteps.  When questioned about this on the Standard Issue Podcast, Howick said: “Who knows? It’s a totally open door for someone else, the possibility of someone else being sucked off. Or all of them going.’”

Willbond added: “Or all of them going at once maybe! I’m just going to leave that hanging in the air …”

While official details of the upcoming series are yet to be announced, it has been revealed that the upcoming festive episode will centre around Howick’s character, Pat. The deceased scoutmaster will reportedly be taking a trip down memory which causes him to “question his very identity.”

A release date is yet to be confirmed.
