The winners of The Game Awards 2024 have been announced. Broadcast live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles the awards, celebrating their tenth anniversary, celebrate the best in gaming and Esports over the last twelve months.
The big winner of the night was ASTRO BOT, which not only won the top prize of Game of the Year but also picked up the awards for Best Game Direction, Best Action/Adventure Game and Best Family Game. Other multiple winners were Balatro and Metaphor: ReFantazio with three awards, while Helldivers 2 and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 won two awards – including Best Performance, which was presented to Melina Jeurgens by Harrison Ford, who made a surprise appearance at the awards alongside Todd Howard and Troy Baker to mark the release of Indiana Jones and The Great Circle.
While the Awards celebrate the best in gaming, there was also an acknowledgement of the current troubles facing the game industry, most notably the massive layoffs that have been happening across the game development world over the past few years. With this in mind, Geoff Keighley presented the first-ever TGA Game Changers Award to Amir Satvat, who has helped people impacted by these layoffs find new jobs in the industry and sharing his knowledge online to help even more looking to develop their careers in gaming.
It also wouldn’t be The Game Awards without a few surprises and reveals; this year’s show had plenty of them. From the reveal of the first trailer for The Witcher 4, confirming that Ciri will be the protagonist, the first look at gameplay from The Outer Worlds 2, the announcement of new titles in the Turok, Onimusha and Okami franchises, a first look at Hazelight’s next co-op adventure Split Fiction, the debut trailer for Borderlands 4, the reveal of a new Game of Thrones adventure set during the events of the HBO series, the announcement that Final Fantasy XVI’s Clive Rosfield will be coming to Tekken 8 or that the next title from Naughty Dog will be an all-new sci-fi hack-n-slash franchise titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, there was a lot to see and get excited about during the show.
