Apple TV+’s Irish dark comedy Bad Sisters is returning for a second season, the streaming service has announced.
Based on the 2012 Belgian series Clan, the show stars Catastrophe’s Sharon Horgan, who also co-writes and produces alongside Dave Finkel and Brett Baer.
In a statement, Horgan says: “If you’d have told me three years ago that I’d be making a series about five murderous sisters chasing a man around Ireland trying to kill him, I’d have said, ‘Yeah, that sounds about right’.
“The response to our show had been beyond what we could have hoped for. It gave us the opportunity to shine a light on stories that don’t always get such a global platform. I look forward to getting chilly in the Irish Sea one more time.”
Bad Sisters follows the Garvey sisters (Horgan, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson), who conspire to kill their brother-in-law John Paul (Claes Bang), to save their sister Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) from his abuse. The show switches between two timelines: flashbacks which show John Paul’s horrific exploits, and the present day, where he has died under mysterious circumstances and two hapless life insurers (Brian Gleeson and Daryl McCormack) aim to get to the bottom of what happened.
The first series aired weekly on Apple TV+ from August and gripped viewers for over ten episodes, even earning a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Horgan has previously said that while the intention was to make a limited series and series one had a satisfying ending, the overwhelming response to the show and the characters gave her second thoughts about saying goodbye to the Garvey sisters.
At this very early stage, there is no release date for series two of Bad Sisters, and we don’t know any details about the plot or even the direction the show might take next. However, Horgan vowed to only bring it back “if I came up with a brilliant idea, if I thought of something that I thought was worthy.”
Series one of Bad Sisters is currently available to stream on Apple TV+.
