Waterloo Road is finally back after seven years off-air and is reuniting fan-favourite characters Kim Campbell, Donte Charles and Chlo Charles.

Angela Griffin will return to her role as Kim Campbell, who was last seen in Series Five as Head of Pastoral Care. The new series will see her character step up into the role of Headteacher, with Griffin saying, “It is exciting to be stepping back into Kim’s shoes and I can’t wait to explore her life, character and how she has evolved since we last met her. The writers have some amazing storylines planned.”

While its final few series were set and filmed in Greenock, Scotland, the BBC have confirmed that Waterloo Road will return to its original home in Manchester, but at a new school. This is the first casting announcement for the show, set to release later in 2022, although the BBC has promised more news soon.

Thomas, who returns as Donte Charles, said, “Waterloo Road was a huge part of my life and career so to go back 15 years later is a dream come true. I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity to get back to acting and doing what I love! I can’t wait to see some old faces and some new. I know this series is going to be the best one yet…”

Griffiths, who plays Thomas’ on-screen wife Chlo, added, “I am incredibly excited to be returning to Waterloo Road – loved by all who make and watch it! Chlo was my first professional acting role, and I feel so lucky to be part of the show again.”

Waterloo Road is known for having a large ensemble cast, featuring actors such as Laurie Brett, Denise Welch, Eva Pope and Jason Merrells. The show, which originally ran from 2006 to 2015, ended after the BBC decided to introduce new dramas to the channel.

The news of Waterloo Road‘s return was announced in September last year, with the BBC citing the popularity of the ‘Waterloo Road box set’ on iPlayer as being one of the key factors in the show’s reboot. The BBC said the series is “consistently among the top five most-watched shows for young audiences.”
