Boy Jr. is a wildly innovative and creative alt pop meets rock singer-songwriter. They are known for their cheeky, witty and important narratives packaged in anthemic left-of-center pop-rock releases. Their latest album is entitled I Love Getting Dumped!, and it is a 13 track journey through love, heartbreak, loss and ultimately moving on after a bad breakup. The album showcases the artist’s ability to connect with listeners, further highlights them as one to watch.
The album begins with ‘Your Mom Is Disappointed In You’, a dreamy down-tempo synth-pop masterpiece. Layered hazy vocals and melodic hooks captivate every note. They sing, “I hear that your mom is disappointed in you / You’re friends with teenagers and it really shows / Don’t buy your groceries and can’t clean your own clothes / Yet you wanna own a home,” showing that their significant other is lacking in so many ways including being immature and having the inability to grow up.
The single ‘Bullying Myself’ is an upbeat indie pop banger filled with funk-fueled bass, soaring guitar riffs and a gritty synth-drenched chorus. The soul-baring track details that all too relatable narrative of being hard on oneself, indulging in negative self talk and having issues with embracing self love and acceptance. Boy Jr. sings, “I’ve been paying more attention / To the things that I’ve been saying / To myself (in my head) / And after some consideration /I just had the realization / I’d be pissed if this shit was said to my friends.” They understand now after some reflection that they shouldn’t treat themselves this way and they are ready to show more kindness to themselves. The song is a welcome self-reflection that is a must listen to earworm.
Then there is ‘I Hope You Feel Terrible’, a comical yet poignant single detailing the aftermath of being broken up with. Boy Jr. details all the ways in which they hope their ex suffers emotionally. Lyrics including, “I hope you feel terrible, I hope you wanna cry / When confronted with a memory of cozy movie nights / I hope you can’t stand the comfort of the slippers that I bought you / Can’t stand imagining me crying but I want you to feel / Terrible,” show this desire to not be the only one in pain. Boy Jr. has a phenomenal way of making sad songs that are equally funny, adding a multidimensional human experience to their music mirroring how life and emotions are simply not one way. ‘I Hope You Feel Terrible’ is a standout track on the album with Boy Jr. once again showcasing their dynamic and versatile songwriting ability.
”Still Be Friends’, is a song where they take control of the breakup by flipping the script and rejecting their exes’ absurd request for a friendship after a horrible breakup. They share “the song is my rather sarcastic way of showing the way I hear someone’s breakup spiel to me.” Musically, ‘Still Be Friends’ features colourful sonics, bouncy beats and alluring vocals. Boy Jr’s use of clever wordplay is on full display here with imagery of stolen cash and crashed cars mirroring the destruction their ex has caused in their life.
Perhaps the strongest track on the album is ‘I’m Breaking Up With You’, a fierce and ferocious move-on anthem. The song takes Boy Jr. into more rock territory showing that they too can create a headbanger rich with emotion. With ‘I’m Breaking Up With You’, the artist embraces their angry phase telling their past love that they are moving on as they wail “I hope you finally got yourself a therapist”. Striking rhythms, arena-worthy guitars and layered production create an urgent atmosphere that captures the listener’s attention right away.
I Love Getting Dumped! is a pivotal genre-bending album that expertly weaves electronic elements with rock instrumentation and pop hooks creating a sound that feels both innovative and timeless. With its raw emotionality and unfiltered lyricism, Boy Jr. transformed their personal experiences into a universal anthem of frustration, heartbreak, and empowerment.
