Against The Current // O2 Forum Kentish Town, London, 2018 – Mary Atkinson
“Sleepless night, bloodshot morning, runway lights, London calling”: Against The Current’s ‘Young & Relentless’ opens, with many fans certainly coming from sleepless nights; the band’s second album was released just one day earlier and many fans lined up outside the Kentish Town venue from early morning.
Against The Current brought people together that night. International friendship groups united by the band, linked hand by hand, arm by arm, flying flags, crying, smiling, screaming and dancing along. All across the crowd. Each individual was able to relate the band’s lyrics to their personal lives in a unique and special way. Others made new friends through their admiration of the act, and awe of Chrissy’s electric stage presence. Her energy spread quickly across the crowd, radiating from her every move.
The experience rid me of any fear for the first time post my experience in the Manchester Attack a year earlier, which was an emotional realisation in itself. It left me to join those crying in the front row. The crowd was together as one in a celebration of music and life. Young and Relentless: with London no longer calling but screaming along.
