Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming space thriller Stowaway. The film boasts a sensational cast, including Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Toni Colette (Hereditary), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and Shamier Anderson (Wynonna Earp).
The trailer emphasises the film’s themes of survival and sacrifice. Stowaway follows three astronauts on a spaceship as they embark on a mission to Mars, tension and panic builds when they discover a stranger has accidentally boarded the ship and there’s only enough oxygen for three people.
Netflix’s official synopsis for the movie reads: “On a mission headed to Mars, an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. Facing dwindling resources and a potentially fatal outcome, the crew is forced to make an impossible decision.”
The film was directed by Joe Penna who made his directorial debut with Icelandic feature film Arctic in 2018, which premiered at Cannes film festival. Penna wrote the script for Stowaway with Arctic co-writer Ryan Morrison. Kendrick is set to play a medical researcher, Colette will portray the role of the ship’s commander, Kim a biologist and Anderson the eponymous stowaway.
Colette has previously appeared in two Netflix successes: Unbelievable and I’m Thinking of Ending Things. When asked about the decision to join the cast of Stowaway Colette said, “I had never really read anything like it. It’s contained and the characters are confined but the questions posed, moral and otherwise, are vast and wide open… it’s ultimately about community, survival, and sacrifice. Who can’t relate to that at the moment?”
Kendrick also shared her love for the script, “It was so simple and so lean, but totally compelling. The thing that feels really relevant is less the isolation of it and more that kind of problem-solving part of your brain that we were all engaging so vigorously in the first couple of months of the pandemic. Just when it seems like you’re onto something, there’s some very obvious fundamental problem.”
Stowaway will be released globally on Netflix on the 22nd of April.
