British-American rapper MF DOOM‘s album Mm..Food has entered the American Billboard 200 chart for the first time since its release in 2004.
The album that features the tracks ‘Beef Rapp’ and ‘Hoe Cakes’ received universal acclaim upon its release and originally peaked at number 17 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and number 9 on Heatseakers Albums chart.
This comes after the studio album Madvillainy, from the duo Madvillain, comprising of DOOM and producer and Madlibs re-entered the Billboard Album Charts for the first time since 2014 in January. The LP has recorded a new peak, charting at Number 73.
An anagram for MF DOOM, Stereogum named MM..Food as DOOM’s best album in 2012 and in 2015 NME named it one of the “one of the 23 maddest and most memorable concept albums”.
DOOM’S wife, Jasmine Dumile, announced on New Year’s Eve that the rapper passed away a few months prior on 31st October 2020, with the cause of death not made known to the public.
Since his death, streams of DOOM’s music has risen by an incredible 870% according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Between 31 December and 5 January, his catalogue was streamed 25.4 million times, compared to the 2.6 million streams in the week before.
MF DOOM’s song downloads and album sales also increased significantly from December 31 to January 5, growing 2,879% and 1,264%, respectively, compared to figures recorded from 25-30 December.
Following the cryptocurrency boom, the MF DOOM estate are auctioning off augmented reality NFT (non-fungible token) art of his trademark masks in honour of the late rapper.
In a joint venture between DOOM’s widow Jasmine Dumile, hip-hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment and digital marketplace Illust Space. The NFT art is expected to fetch prices from £10,729 GBP ($15,000 USD) to £53,647 ($75,000), with 10% of the proceeds going back to DOOM’s estate in the form of royalties to fund other projects.
