The Netflix thriller will see rising star John Boyega and acting royalty Robert De Niro together onscreen.

The Formula will follow the story of a Formula One racing prodigy (John Boyega) who finds himself in a threatening situation, becoming a getaway driver in order to save the only family he has left. Robert De Niro’s role in the project has not yet been revealed, but rumor has it he’ll play the leader of a criminal organization.

Gerard McMurray, who debuted with one of Netflix’s first original features Burning Sands back in 2017, is making his return to the streaming platform to direct the film.

Alongside directing, McMurray will also write and produce the film through his new production company Buppie Productions. American film producers Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh will also produce the film, alongside Robert De Niro himself.

John Boyega shot to fame with the Star Wars sequels in 2015. Recently he starred in Small Axe, an acclaimed anthology film series based on the real-life experiences of London’s West Indian community, set between 1969 and 1982 and directed by Steve McQueen. Boyega was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Television Awards in the Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television category.

He is currently working on the set of They Cloned Tyrone with Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, which is currently in production in Atlanta, Georgia.

Robert De Niro returns to Netflix following the success of his performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, in which he stars alongside Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

De Niro is also going to star in David O. Russell’s next untitled movie, which also sees Christian Bale and Margot Robbie in the cast.

A release date for The Formula has not been made public yet.
