A TV special to mark the 60th anniversary of The Beach Boys could soon be in the works, according to the band’s co-founder Al Jardine.

The special would commemorate 60 years since the band recorded their first single ‘Surfin’ back in 1961. Speaking to The Rolling Stone Jardine outlined that though a fulll commemorative tour would be unlikely, he was keen to mark the occasion.

“I do believe we will. Well, not a tour. We’ll hit some very important … 10 or 20 areas of the world. Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and have a renaissance, and present some of this great material again. It’s difficult to say, but it makes sense. I know there’s something in the works. I just can’t tell you when or where.”

When asked about a TV special, Jardine responded: “We’d like to explore that possibility. It’s always good to be able to look forward to something positive now.” Following an unpredictable year of isolation, restrictions and political unrest Jardine elaborated: “especially coming out of this horrendous year, to bring some beautiful, fresh, positive music to the world again”.

Back in 2012, the remaining members of the group put aside years of tumult and bad-blood to embark on a tour to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. Two of the bands founding members Dennis and Carl Wilson had sadly passed away prior to this.

The group have notoriously had a turbulent relationship, particularly between Brian Wilson and Mick Love, with their feud dating all the way back to their seminal 1966 album Pet Sounds. A mixture of creative differences, substance abuse and Wilson’s spiralling mental health led to the band’s break up in 1982.

Commenting on the band’s history Love had said, “There was a division…Brian, Carl and Dennis were into one lifestyle, while myself and Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston were not.”

However, Brian Wilson’s representatives have denounced Jardine’s plans. “There is nothing on the table at this point,” Jean Sievers, Wilson’s manager stated, adding: “No one has spoken to us about it or reached out.”
