Dublin’s Somebody’s Child have rapidly established themselves as a creative sound, with their catchy guitar motifs and the distinctive, raw voice of songwriter Cian Godfrey. With the release of new single ‘Lost’ they show that they can master more than just the indie genre. This will be part of their upcoming EP Hope, Amongst Other Things, to be released early 2021.

Following the November release of ‘Top Drawer Romance’, ‘Lost’ is a contrast in style to Somebody’s Child’s previous work, reflecting their pop influences. This new instalment feels more personal, with lyrics expressing feelings of uncertainty and challenges in your 20s. Lyrics such as “I’m terrified of the unknown” will make this song particularly resonate today.

Talking about the single, Somebody’s Child said: “Lost was written when I came out of college and experienced a lot of career anxiety. Everyone else seemed to know what they were doing except for me. The song taught me a lot in hindsight, I think I was probably suppressing a lot of emotions that were manifesting in situations that weren’t really relevant to what was going on inside. It’s a real example of what a therapeutic experience songwriting can be”.

These ideas are reflected in emotive lyrics such as “I’ve been crying underwater” and “I’ve been lost”. The song is a slow build up, initially focusing on the expressive voice of Godfrey, then introducing layers of drums, guitar and background vocals. The video is a beautifully shot journey transitioning from dim artificially lighting in the dark, to daylight scenes on the beach.

‘Lost’ is a display of soulful storytelling. It demonstrates Somebody’s Child’s versatility, and why they should not be shoehorned into the label of being just another ‘indie’ act.
