Thirty-three-year-old Oscar-nominated Elliot Page publicly came out as transgender on their Twitter this morning.
This comes six years after Elliot, formerly Ellen, came out as gay in 2014.
Elliot is famous for his role as Vanya in The Umbrella Academy – with the filming of the third season due to start shortly – and his Oscar-nominated role as the pregnant teenager Juno in Juno (2007).
This morning, Elliot made a public announcement on Twitter where he officially came out as transgender, much to the surprise of his fans.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans. My pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”
Elliot’s wife of two years, Emma Portner, publicly voiced her own support towards her husband, writing, “I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer, and non-binary people are a gift to this world.”
There are still worries on the horizon for Page however: “My job is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared.”
Page is grateful for the support he has received so far from his family, friends, and his followers on social media, but asks that he is also given the privacy needed at this emotional time.
