Track Review: Perfect Someone // Thom Southern

Thom Southern is back with his second single ‘Perfect Someone’. This song will send frissons all over as Thom’s mellow vocals tesselate with the synth and drum accompaniments.

The Belfast-based artist burst onto the scene with his debut track ‘Shivers’, which resembles a softer version of Lee Mavers of The La’s on ‘There She Goes’. It was definitely a song that made me feel fuzzy and relaxed, eyes closed and head bopping from side to side.

‘Perfect Someone’ conjures the best of Thom’s primary influences; Beck, My Bloody Valentine and The Smashing Pumpkins. The core of the song is nostalgic simplicity, achieved with repetitive melodies and an 808 drum machine. This makes it hypnotic and listeners will feel they have experienced a fleeting memory after the song’s over.

The lyrics are equally simple and no less powerful: “An image of the greatest day was shown /  I saw it in a photograph / I found it in a pocket I forgot I had.”

Whether it is from an album, dusty drawer or an old coat, unearthing a photograph or small trinket of the past that will never happen again is bittersweet.

Thom elaborates on the sentiment of his single: ‘The song is about that spontaneous moment when an old romance pops into your head and takes you back to a specific time and place.”
