A new and exclusive clip from the upcoming film Come Away, starring David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Caine and Angelina Jolie, has just been released.
Come Away is a fantasy drama reimagining of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. It follows the two children Alice (Keira Chansa) and Peter (Jordan A. Nash) as they try to help their parents overcome the death of their oldest son and the children’s older brother, David (Reece Yates). This leads to an ultimatum that makes Alice and Jack having to choose between home and imagination.
Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo play husband and wife in this 19th-century London setting, who are also the grieving parents of Alice and Peter. In a way to help console their parents, Alice and Peter find comfort in creating and escaping to Wonderland and Neverland.
The film is directed by Brenda Chapman, the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature with Pixar’s Brave in 2012. The script for Come Away is penned by Marissa Kate Goodhill, who has revealed that she was inspired by the 2006 Guillermo Del Toro film Pan’s Labyrinth in terms of the darkness and grief within fantasy.
In an interview with Deadline, Oyelowo said that the reason he wanted to be a part of the film was because of how it is new, yet familiar: “Audiences always gravitate to the familiar, that’s coming at them in a fresh way. Like having Peter Pan and Alice from Alice in Wonderland and the world of Neverland and Wonderland combined in a way that is both grounded and yet feels fantastical. And also the fact they approached me to play the father of both Alice and Peter, which means you are getting to see it in a different way than you’ve seen before, with a different kind of Alice and a different kind of Peter. Fresh, though familiar.”
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, but it was not released in the USA until the 13 November. It is set to be released in cinemas around the UK on 18 December.
