Netflix has released the first stills from upcoming film The Dig, in which ‘a widow finds hidden riches on her property.’

Based on John Preston’s 2007 novel of the same name, The Dig will star Lily James, Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan.

The film will focus on the discovery and excavation of an Anglo-Saxon ship at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, which has been dubbed “Britain’s Tutankhamun”.

Set in 1939, the film follows the stories of the people affected by the excavation, including amateur archaeologist Basil Brown (Fiennes) and widowed landowner Edith Pretty (Mulligan).

Written by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre, Harlots) and directed by Simon Stone (The Daughter), the star-studded adaptation also features Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott and Monica Dolan.

James is currently starring in Netflix’s Rebecca, a psychological thriller released last month on the platform, based on a novel by Daphne du Maurier.

Speaking about filming Rebecca, James said “I think I got a bit sucked into the vortex. I didn’t know which way to turn at times. It was the mindset of the character: it really got under my skin – the insecurities, the questioning herself and the paranoia. I think I let that overtake me a bit sometimes.”

The Dig will be released on Netflix, although no official release date has been announced.
