A new survey has found that 72% of directors in their early careers have considered leaving theatre and the arts forever due to the impact of COVID-19.

The Early Career Director’s Network carried out the survey which uncovered the revelation that nearly three-quarters of new directors were struggling in their careers during the coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, approximately 50% of those surveyed have sought employment outside of theatre to make a living.

Many of those surveyed have said that funding and opportunities are key to helping new and emerging directors to survive this period. Participants also feel excluded from conversations about recovery and the future for the industry. The survey creators have called for more transparency from industry leaders to create a supportive network within the theatre community.

The survey results also suggest that cancelled projects and a lack of financial aid has left many questioning whether they have a future in the arts.

The Directors Network stated that “with these findings, we hope to spark conversations and provide data for the people we know are fighting the fight on our behalf, while also urging them and those who have neglected us, to include us in conversations about the future.”
