The National Theatre has announced the release of a new podcast series launching on the 28th September.
In That Black Theatre Podcast, Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded PhD student Nadine Deller will examine Black British theatre-making of the past, present, and future with help from her sister, Nadia, and special guests.
The first series will be made up of twelve weekly episodes, in which Deller will explore the Black Plays Archive, celebrating the leaders of Black British theatre within the context of the key socio-political events that have influenced their work. Playwright Jasmine Lee-Jones and leading academic Lynette Goddard are just some of the guests who will join Deller to discuss the works of a wide range of black theatre practitioners, including Errol John, Alfred Fagon, and Jackie Kay. There will also be debate around ongoing issues such as the underrepresentation of black queer and lesbian experiences on stage as well as the challenges faced by black female playwrights.
By mixing history and more traditional interviews with more casual discussion, Nadine Deller stated that she hopes “to show that black theatre is for everyone.”
