Track Review: Hesitate // Make Friends

Joining a plethora of 2020 releases, Make Friends’ ‘Hesitate’ is an immersive dive into the mind of an addict’s close friend.

Smooth vocals and muted echoes become increasingly more dynamic throughout ‘Hesitate’, plunging the listener into the emotions of the protagonist. Soft cymbals and a steady drumbeat punctuate lead singer Tom Andrew’s every word, before pausing momentarily to emphasise the point: “I can’t be the one to fail you”.

As a listener, it’s easy to feel the emotion behind this track; short and forceful motifs emphasise the seriousness of its message. Meanwhile, the progression from woozy to intense immaculately preserves a sultry late-summer sound.

Reminiscent of the live music scene and solidifying the band’s reputation for producing infectious indie-pop, this track is everything you would expect from a September Make Friends release. Somehow, the foursome possesses an ability to turn a breakdown of emotion into a thoroughly enjoyable indie track. For this reason, ‘Hesitate’ is so instantly replayable.
