Our favourite crime fighting preschoolers, The Powerpuff Girls, are set to receive a makeover. Sources report that The CW Network is developing a live action version of the series.
Craig McCracken created the classic animated Cartoon Network series in 1998. It followed three youngsters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they defended their city, Townsville, from evil. The girls’ father figure and creator, Professor Utonium, was responsible for the girls’ abilities. Shown in the famous intro, the Professor accidentally adds Chemical X to a solution of ‘sugar, spice, and everything nice’. The resulting explosive reaction created the girls and granted them awe-inspiring powers.
Running between 1998 and 2005, the show lasted six seasons and 78 episodes. The ‘Powerpuff Girls Movie’ was also created in 2002. Cartoon Network aired an animated reboot of the series in 2016, lasting three seasons.
The live-action reboot brings a huge change from the original show, as the tiny toddlers are now all grown up. Now adult women, the trio are older, wiser, and more complex.
The official synopsis of the show, via Digital Spy reads:
“Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now, they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhoods to crime fighting. When the world needs them more than ever, will they agree to reunite?”
Original creator, McCracken, is not involved with the reboot, but Warner Bros. Television will produce the series. Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody (Sleepy Hollow, Juno, Jennifer’s Body) are set to write the script. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden will executive produce through Berlanti Productions.
If the show goes to plan, the live-action Powerpuff Girls could be a likely fit for The CW’s showcase. Superhero themes are already a significant part of the majority of the network’s shows, and Berlanti’s company is also responsible for eight different series’ on The CW network. He is well known for his superhero programs involving the DC Universe. With Supergirl and upcoming series Batwoman, the network has always highlighted the importance of female representation. The CW is also a channel known for their reboots, such as the popular Archie Comics update, Riverdale. All these factors point to a very positive outlook for the show.
The show is still in development stages, so there is no release date or cast information yet. For the moment, the plan to bring the animation into the live-action world sounds promising. If you’re missing strong female heroism on your screen, then The Powerpuff Girls could be your next favourite show. We can’t wait to see what’s next in store.
