The hit BBC show ‘Our Girl’, featuring Michelle Keegan, has been cancelled after just four seasons.
The show first aired in 2013, with the titular role of Molly Dawes being played by Lacey Turner for the first season before being picked up by Michelle Keegan for subsequent episodes.
Tony Grounds, the creator of the show, has announced he felt that the show had come to a natural ending. Grounds stated, “With the finale of series four showing Georgie ready to move on with her life, it feels like the right time for us to do the same.”
This announcement comes after news that Michelle Keegan had stepped down after three series playing Sgt Georgie Lane.
Keegan announced her departure in March to pursue other opportunities, with Jacqueline Jossa originally tipped to play the new female lead.
Throughout the last season, viewers have seen Georgie go through heartache as she came face to face with the man was responsible for the death of her fiance Elvis (played by Luke Pasqualino).
Keegan’s last scenes showed Georgie finally coming to terms with Elvis’ death, as she was seen tying her engagement ring to a kite before letting it float off into the sky.
Undoubtedly fans of the show will be upset, however, Grounds commented on the future of the show, “Michelle and I are keen to continue our working relationship and, who knows, maybe we’ll catch up with Georgie in the future.”
With the show racking up 6.31 million viewers, controller of BBC Drama (Piers Wenger) said, “We are very proud of Our Girl and would like to thank Tony Grounds, Michelle Keegan and the fantastic cast and crew for all their hard work on the show”.
Although the show has been cancelled, it seems the door has been left open for Keegan to return in the future – but for now, viewers are bidding farewell to seeing ‘Our Girl’ on our screens.
