Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre is set to reopen in September as it announces plans to screen musical recordings throughout the month.
The musical screenings will include the likes of The King and I, An American in Paris, 42nd Street, Kinky Boots, The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! and The Wind in the Willows.
Also being presented will be From Here to Eternity, John Logan’s Red, Hetty Feather, Ruthless! The Musical, The Toxic Avenger and Riverdance.
The theatre has been running dance workshops for kids over the summer, but these screenings are the first return to theatre shows.
The musical screening series has been created alongside Stage2View, a company which helps to distribute captured shows and place them inside venues. The theatre, which can usually accommodate over two thousand audience members, has promised a safe and socially distanced experience.
Michael Ockwell, Mayflower Theatre chief executive has said that he is “delighted to be able to bring audiences back” to the theatre. He added: “Whilst we are unable to present our usual offering to full audiences, this innovative use of our space for musical films takes us back to our heritage with our venue being used for both live shows and films.”
The theatre’s live shows have been cancelled or postponed, including the Cinderella pantomime which has been rescheduled for 2021.
