The theatre industry has never been more uncertain in the UK, but as lockdown gradually eases, creative union Equity have released guidance for those returning to work in the field.

The new guidance, released earlier this month, runs in tandem with new government guidance for public performances. The outlines support individuals returning to work within the theatre industry, and it is split into two parts. The first half addresses the issues potentially faced by performers and creatives on stage, whereas the second half provides support for self-employed and freelance workers.

To achieve this, Equity have stated that producers and engagers must carry out even more thorough risk assessments prior to workers’ return – before rehearsals begin.

Equity said: “The assessment will show what steps can be taken to minimise risk (social distancing, hand sanitiser, hand washing facilities, and so on) and that action should be taken before rehearsals begin.”

Furthermore, the guidance reminds performers of the impact the pandemic has had on black people, people of colour, as well as older people, disabled people, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

Equity confirmed that: “[Individuals should not be] discriminated against on the grounds of a protected characteristic, including at work or in the pursuit of work opportunities.”

As indoor performances with socially distanced audiences are rumoured to take place at the start of August in England, these guidelines will no doubt help carve a pathway for COVID-safe performances during one of theatre’s most testing periods of time.
