Throwback Thursday: Alright // Supergrass

Let me take you back to the 90’s. A time where no one was totally sure where music was going; whether it was great or shit; whether to embrace chart music, or to regress into past eras in retaliation to the drivel. That is, until the likes of grunge and Britpop took over. Obviously, we’re all irrefutably aware of the Britpop figureheads, but their influence sparked a series of splinter groups – Supergrass being one of them. Everyone forgets that they know this song from 1995; it’s so unsubtly ripped-off from a conglomerate of 60’s pop influences.

But, this aside, ‘Alright’ is undeniably one of the most feel-good songs of recent years. The track was written in a freezing-cold cottage whilst trying to keep warm. Yet ironically, whenever this song is played, it evokes summery feelings of carefree teenage antics. It’s unsurprising, therefore, that it quickly became an anthem for youth culture. If any song can cure your February blues ‘Alright’ can – picture yourself in an open-top car, driving around the countryside on a sunny day with your mates (and then realise you’re back in your room with a pile of work to do). But everything will be ‘Alright’!
