If there was one thing the world needed, a second Mamma Mia film was it. Ten years have flown by since the first movie and in all truth, many highly doubted there would be a second one. Until this year. Cue catchy songs, questionable costumes, dazzling dance routines and a star-studded line up of some of film’s finest and freshest new talent.
Just what the doctor ordered
It’s easy to see why so many people thought this film was superb. The audience want catchy songs, loveable characters, humour, heartwarming moments and the odd look at Colin Firth (just go with me on this one, please), and that’s exactly what they got and more. A feel-good, witty and vibrant film packed with all things ABBA and as much energy as the first instalment.
Without discussing too much about the storyline to end up giving it away, it’ll be that the film probably won’t play out how you expect it to. A look back in time at a young and fearless Donna and the Dynamo’s sets the tone whilst tying together the events of the present day. Storytelling in this way certainly creates an aura of intrigue and mystery around the plot. How did Donna stumble across a beautiful Greek island all those years ago? Where did she find such cool friends? And yet again, we witness the love and laughter of Sophie and Sky until their seemingly perfect relationship hits turbulence as Sophie ventures onto a business opportunity – transforming her mother’s once run-down hotel into a stylish hotspot named Hotel Bella Donna, and the three coolest fathers to ever exist come together once more, providing a comical and heartwarming essence to the film.
New faces and one major piece of star power
The original set of characters return for this movie alongside notably fresh talent that comes in the form of young Harry (Hugh Skinner), Bill (Josh Dylan) and Sam (Jeremy Irvine) and Dynamo’s Jessica Keenan Wynn (young Tanya) and Alexa Davies (young Rosie), accompanied by none other than pop legend, Cher. Initially, it seemed easy to be sceptical about her appearance. Would it be a quick cameo that stole the thunder from the rest of the film? After watching, I can confirm that her presence simply made the film even better. It balanced out a storyline that is actually quite sombre and mature whilst presenting a vivacious and unique character.
The Verdict
A film packed full of energy, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has proven to be the hit film of the summer. Delightful songs, hilarious moments and an insight into the once courageous and care-free, Donna Sheridan. Vibrant, playful and the epitome of a feel-good film, the 2nd Mamma Mia will have you singing for days (or in my case, probably forever). If your ears and eyes haven’t yet had the pleasure of watching Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, then by order of myself, a bunch of my friends and most importantly my gran, you definitely should.
