The title of Liverpool three-piece Oya Paya’s latest release ‘Put My Record On’ may conjure up the summery sounds of Corinne Bailey Rae’s 2006 hit, yet the vibe couldn’t be more different. Unless, that is, you’re judging by how quickly a song can get stuck in your head after only a few listens. A mishmash of influences can be heard on Ashwin, Saam and Maxime’s homespun brand of alt rock and hip-hop. Hailing from different corners of the globe, the trio’s emphasis on making “spicy” music brought them together in early 2016 to jam in the comfort of their bedrooms; but now, with increasing radio play, things are slowly taking off for the three friends.

‘Put My Record On’ is deliciously catchy, driven by a Jamie T-esque hook. A punchy riff, strummed with a measure of bluster, powers the rhythm section which is accented with poppy harmonies and whistling sound effects. The track’s accompanying video, produced by Stella Foster and Ryan Jafarzadeh, depicts the band as the UK’s urban youth, using music as an escape from the confusion of life.

So follow the band’s advice and put Oya Paya’s record on.
