Suffolk rock band In My Disguise are heavily influenced by Muse and Audioslave, driven by an appetite for big riffs and choruses. The band played at the ‘Independent Venue Week’ festival at The John Peel Centre in Stowmarket. Earlier this year, they signed to Domino PR and this week release their debut EP Achromatic. Achromatic balances the ferocious instrumentation with a melodic edge, helping them stand out from the crowd.

In My Disguise are brilliant at writing pummeling rock songs with a fondness for crunchy distortion. ‘Alive’ is a perfect example of this. It’s just under three minutes, and you can feel the sweaty energy being poured into it. There’s a strong hint of post-grunge in Ollie Smith’s vocals, while the guitar solo brings something refreshing to the genre.

Recent single ‘Hour Glass’ contains an infectious chorus, and a stunning vocal performance from Smith. He plays around with the notes superbly, while the delivery is executed to perfection. The guitar riff packs an equally large punch the more you listen to it, showing the band’s strong potential.

On ‘Story’, the clean guitars don’t mesh well with the vocals. It’s drippy, forgettable and could have benefitted from some better production. ‘Fear’ is a better example of a rock ballad. The crunch on the guitar creates a massive wall of sound, taking the listener into an atmospheric haze of distortion.

Achromatic is out on May 19th and available to pre-order now.
