The console had previously been named the Nintendo NX.
Nintendo have unveiled their new console. Previously called the Nintendo NX, the Nintendo Switch will be a hand-held console with detachable controllers – named Joy-Cons – and the ability to dock with a device to enable TV playability. The dock will also act as the charging unit for the hand-held device.
Players will be able to use the Joy-Cons and multiple Switch devices for local multi-player, with two players on each device. The games themselves will be available in cartridge form – similar to the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo have also confirmed the device will support Amiibo figures as long as the game has Amiibo content.
A first look at the console also showed the console’s Pro controller, which will serve a similar function to the Pro controller on the Wii U. The preview also confirmed the console will be released in March 2017.
Among the new titles available for the Nintendo Switch will be Just Dance 2017 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Currently available titles including NBA 2K17, Splatoon and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will also be available on the new console.
Nintendo Switch will be available from March 2017. Watch the first look below.
