The pulse of a New Order-esque drum machine beat opens ‘Breathe’, the latest offering from English four-piece Voodoo And The Crypts. Comprising Matt Mitchell on guitar and vocals, Jordan Woolnough also on guitar, Rob Davies on bass and Sam Webb behind the drum kit, the Essex natives based in Brighton create a warm, familiar brand of psychedelic indie pop.
In the wake of pop rock bands inspired by the popularity of The 1975, Voodoo And The Crypts offer a more complex approach to synth-pop characterised by colourful, shimmery guitar hooks and tropical melodies as heard on ‘Breathe’. Featuring Two Door Cinema Club-style riffs coupled with Mitchell’s dreamy vocals, there is enough professional musicality and pop sensibilities to please mainstream radio stations and more underground audiences alike. The band’s self-dubbed “vibes” give an injection of drama to the quartet’s small arsenal of songs, with ‘Breathe’ being the climatic song in their cannon.
Having played their first gig as a support act at the Prince Albert, you can catch these guys at Together The People festival in Brighton this September.
