Single Review: Let Go of the Past // The Tuts

The Tuts have been wowing audiences with their frenetic live shows. Having released two EP’s (self titled and Time To Move On), they also played festivals such as Indietracks and Glastonbury, and supported The Selecter and The Undertones. Their debut album ‘Update Your Brain’ is out in September following a successful Pledge campaign. Last week, they released their first single off the album, ‘Let Go of the Past’ on their own label, Dovetown.

‘Let Go Of the Past’ is about failed relationships and not worrying about any previous mistakes made. It’s a gloriously fun slice of pop punk, which shows off their songwriting skills perfectly. Production wise, the band have stepped things up a notch and grown tighter as a unit. The harmonies between Nadia on vocals/guitar and Harriet on bass are particularly enthralling.

The lyrics are relatable as Nadia sings about how the past has been affecting her: “It’s been years and its been months / I still can’t let go of the past, it’s ruining my present and holding back my future.” The ooohs on the pre chorus are a perfect build up to probably the catchiest, empowering chorus you’ll hear all summer: “Let go of the past, there’s no point clinging to something that wouldn’t last.”

‘Let Go of the Past’ shows The Tuts can write short but addictive songs that leave you wanting more. If this is a taster of what ‘Update Your Brain’ is going to sound like, then we’re in for something special.
