Schemata Theory are a metal quintet from Reading. In 2012, they released their debut album Dry Lung Rhetoric to positive reviews, and building their reputation in the metal scene through sharing festival line ups with the likes of Sacred Mother Tongue and Breed 77. After going through a line-up change, they return with their new EP, Networks. It was recorded with producer Justin Hill (SikTh, Heart of a Coward), so it will be interesting to see if he can help bring out the heavier elements.
‘Our Only Home’ is massive, the big guitars adding a heavier dynamic to Schemata Theory’s sound. It feels tighter and confident, with more emphasis on the vocals. ‘New Vision’ sees the guitars blend in nicely with Joshua Barretto’s fast drumming and a guitar solo, showing the band are getting more diverse by incorporating catchy hooks in their music.
This is demonstrated further in ‘Horror Show’ with an orchestral section in the chorus. This track shows another example of Hugh Roch and Mario Scinto’s intertwining guitar work, while Myles Dyer displays his biggest vocal performance yet. The production work on Networks is stunning. It helps Schemata Theory become a behemoth, with tracks that suit nicely in larger venues.
If you’re a fan of metal which brings both an assaulting and progressive sound, then Schemata Theory are definitely a band to look out for in the future.
