Fyfe is the pseudonym currently used by 25-year-old Londoner, Paul Dixon. Formerly known as David’s Lyre, Dixon began releasing music on social media platforms in 2010, whilst studying at Manchester University. After brief relations with a major record label, he released his first album, Pictures of Our Youth independently via Bandcamp. Shortly after this release, Dixon called an end to the project. Perhaps parting ways with university, Mercury Records and his former alias has led the musician to a greater beginning; Dixon’s many talents have been cultivated and showcased on an eleven-track masterpiece.

His debut album as Fyfe, Control, combines jazz elements with electronic back beats and profound vocals in what some have classified under genres ranging from electro-pop to R&B. Perhaps such labels are unnecessary, as it seems Fyfe’s music speaks for itself. With over 27,000 Soundcloud followers, and 700,000+ plays on the song ‘Solace’, Dixon has caught the attention of music lovers and critics alike. The Guardian has deemed ‘Solace’ “his most effective calling card to date”.

Perhaps the most intriguing song, ‘Holding On’, leaves the listener with the bittersweet feeling that marks the entire album. It’s one of those songs you’d listen to on a night-time train ride as you nostalgically watch the lights of towns pass by. The lyrics discuss the difficulties of individuals in a long distance relationship, highlighting a typical scenario of miscommunication. Dixon sings, “I missed your call / it’s raining here/ the light in Amsterdam is fading dear”. The gentle and airy tone of the reverb-soaked guitar resonates throughout the piece, as the slow, soulful vocals demand attention. Approaching the chorus, the simple electronic beat picks up as the singer croons, “trust me / you never know it’s special ’till it’s gone”.

Fyfe is set to play various music festivals across Europe this summer, along with a few European dates announced for October. As his sentimental and unique style continue to gain him critical acclaim, he’s certainly one to watch!
