Sony has announced the closure of the Driveclub developers.

Sony have today (March 22) confirmed that it will close Evolution Studios. Best known for developing the World Rally Championship and Driveclub games, the studio will close as part of, what Sony call, “compulsory redundancies.”

In a statement, Sony explained “Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive landscape can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects. As part of this process we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to the European studios structure. As a result, it has been decided that Evolution Studios will close.”

The company went on to say that it would work with staff effected by the closure and try and reallocate them elsewhere. However, no word has been given on what will happen to the virtual reality adaptation of Driveclub, which is under development.

In addition, Driveclub director Paul Rustchynsky posted a statement on his Twitter page, thanking fans for their support.
