A marker for the beginning of another awards season is January’s Golden Globes ceremony and it was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez that led the way for nominations this year.
American comedian Nikki Glaser took the baton as host at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, with jokes aimed at the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Glen Powell going down a treat. Inevitably, there were a few more controversial ones that caused quite the stir— a mention for Diddy being just as uncomfortable as it was predictable.
Focusing on the awards themselves, it was a memorable night for the crew of The Brutalist, which went home with both Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Drama Film. Already receiving a lot of buzz as we approach the heights of awards season, these early results will certainly amplify the hype.
To add to the acclaim for the film, Adrien Brody beat out the aforementioned Chalamet as well as Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, Sebastian Stan and Daniel Craig in the Best Actor in a Drama category.
Over two decades ago, Brody was nominated for a Globe in the same category for his performance in The Pianist, but was beaten out by Jack Nicholson’s About Schmidt performance.
Sebastian Stan may have come up short as Donald Trump in The Apprentice, but he did get his hands on an award for A Different Man, winning Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in a fascinating pool, ahead of Hugh Grant and Glen Powell.
There were some fascinating films recognised for the actress performances too, with Fernanda Torres’s Best Actress in a Drama win for Brazilian film I’m Still Here warmly received.
Another inspired decision saw Demi Moore win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for The Substance.
Many expected Mikey Madison to prevail for her performance as titular character Anora, but it was an underwhelming night for Sean Baker’s film as a whole; Baker himself missed out, along with Supporting Actor Yura Borisov.
Talking of supporting roles, the Golden Globes went to Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin for their respective roles in Emilia Pérez and A Real Pain. The former may well be the most talked about film this awards’ season and whilst it certainly isn’t universally loved, the performance of Saldaña has regularly been earmarked as a standout.
‘El Mal’, performed by the Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy star won Best Original Song too, making it four wins on the night for the most-nominated film Emilia Pérez.
