In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Amy Hennig has revealed new details about the upcoming game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, from Skydance New Media and Marvel Games, was previously announced in 2021, with a trailer released earlier this year. As part of Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainment Preview 2025 series, Hennig – who heads up the Skydance New Media Division and serves as a writer on the game- has revealed fresh new details, including a first look at Wakanda.
Hennig also confirmed that alongside occupied Paris, Wakanda is a key setting. “We wanted to tell a globe-trotting story,” she told Entertainment Weekly “There are yet-to-be-revealed locations in between”. This kind of globe-trotting adventure perfectly matches Hennig, who previously worked as creative director and writer on the first three Uncharted games.
The game will follow a young Steve Rogers played by Drew Moerlein (The Ruse) and the Black Panther of 1943, Azzuri, grandfather of T’Challa, played by Khary Payton (The Walking Dead). It won’t be smooth sailing between the two as they are described as crossing paths in occupied Paris and striking an “uneasy alliance to overcome a common threat”.
The article confirms Hydra will be the primary adversary in the game. “It’s pretty black and white. Who doesn’t want to punch a Nazi?” Hennig says. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is also reported to take place between four different perspectives, Captain America, Black Panther, Gabriel Jones (Marque Richardson, Dear White People) a Howling Commando and a sharpshooter in the U.S. military; and Nanali (Megalyn Echikunwoke, Vixen) who is described as a “Wakandan spy embedded in occupied Paris who’s skilled in infiltration”. Gamers will be able to play as all four of the characters at various portions of the narrative.
When the first Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra trailer dropped it was praised for its impressive graphics, so it’s no surprise Hennig also stressed the importance of visuals saying “We really wanted the visual fidelity to be high so that you could kind of forget that you’re looking at a game, that it should feel and look and sound and smell like you’re watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you’re driving the action.”
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set to be released in 2025.
