Foamstars, Square Enix’s four-vs-four shooter, will become free-to-play later this year.

The change is set to take place on October 4th, 2024, and was announced on August 27th on Square Enix’s support website. Available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, the game will also no longer require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online.

Users who bought Foamstars before this shift in the game’s pricing model will be entitled to a free ‘Legacy Gift’. It includes the following:

— 12 exclusive colour-variant Bubble Beastie skins
 — 1 exclusive Slide Board design
 — 1 title: “Legacy”

More details on how to obtain this Legacy Gift will be made available at a later stage on the company’s website and X account. In a letter from Foamstars producer Kosuke Okatani, it was revealed that a new season for the game, also starting on October 4th, will include five new maps for its Smash the Star game mode, as well as new boss battles for Squad Missions. The season will also introduce Diamond Trade, a brand new feature that allows players to collect tokens called Diamond Chips in-game to be exchanged for an array of items.

Featuring different game modes, Foamstars allows players to transform the maps around them to build terrain and new surfaces for vantage points against enemies. Players can control different characters with unique skill sets and foam guns, creating diverse ways to defeat enemy teams.
