Fancy another trip to the Palm Royale circa 1969? Well, you’re in luck! Apple TV+ announced on June 6th that there will indeed be a second season of the period-comedy drama, following the finale of the first season in May.
Based on the 2018 novel Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel, the first season saw the escapades of Maxine, a newbie to Palm Springs, and her desperate attempts to climb the rigid social ladder, controlled by Evelyn Rollins (Allison Janney). As the series progressed, more complications arose for Maxine, largely involving the impressive ensemble cast that includes Ricky Martin, Laura Dern, Kaia Gerber and Carol Burnett.
As seen via the Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%, as well as our very own season one review, Palm Royale proved divisive to both critics and audiences. With a “a middling focus spread amongst too many episodes” alongside a “jumbled tone,” the series seems to have struggled to find its feet. However, this can’t have affected viewership too strongly given its renewal.
Apple TV+, who, much like other streamers, are hesitant to announce viewership numbers, gave the go-ahead for a second season. A statement by Head of Programming, Matt Cherniss, read: “Palm Royale has delighted global audiences and we are thrilled that viewers will have the opportunity to spend more time with this highly entertaining, iconic cast, from Kristen Wiig to the incomparable Carol Burnett.”
Co-star and Executive Producer Dern echoed such sentiments in her own statement, claiming: “Jayme [Lemons] and I with Jaywalker Pictures have been dreaming up this project for so long in hopes that audiences would have delicious fun with the radical ride that is the world of Palm Royale. We all can’t wait to get started.”
