Apple TV+ has announced that their new limited series Lady in the Lake will premiere on July 19th. The first two episodes will drop on this date followed by weekly instalments every Friday until August 23rd.

Lady in the Lake is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Laura Lippman. At its time of release, Lippman’s novel came to rave reviews with acclaimed horror author Stephen King even describing it as “extraordinary” in a review for The New York Times

The seven-part drama series will focus on two mysteries in 1960s Baltimore: the disappearance of 11-year-old Tessie Fine, and the mysterious death of mother and race political activist Cleo Sherwood. Through the perspective of Jewish housewife turned investigative journalist Maddie Schwartz, the story (which has been described as “a feverish noir thriller” by Apple TV+) promises to be a dark intellectual puzzle which will have you on the edge of your seat.

Academy Award winner Natalie Portman will take on the leading role of Maddie, while Emmy-nominated Moses Ingram will play Cleo. Alongside them, Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison and Pruitt Taylor Vince will also star.

Lady in the Lake will be directed by Alma Har’el who previously won a Directors Guild of America Award for her feature film directorial debut Honey Boy in 2019.

In an interview with Variety, Har’el notes that an important change from page to screen is the increased role of Cleo. “The book itself opens with Cleo, but you don’t really get to spend time with her and experience the story from her perspective and see her life. And that is a big difference in the show. The show is more of a two-hander.”

With a promise of a twist even bigger than the one in the original novel, it will be exciting to see how Lady in the Lake takes the material from the page and moulds it for the screen.
