Netflix’s The Witcher has been renewed for a fifth season, which will be its last, as the upcoming fourth season sees Henry Cavill replaced with Liam Hemsworth.

After announcing that the fourth season of The Witcher is in production, the show’s X (formerly Twitter) account also revealed that they are planning its fifth and final season.

Fans were left disappointed as it was announced in 2022 that Henry Cavil would not return as the main character, Geralt, after the third season. He is due to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth from season four.

Based on the novels by Andrzej Sapowski, adaptations of The Witcher have been a huge hit with fantasy fans. The Netflix show, which follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, Crown Princess Cirilla of Cintra, and the quarter-elf sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg, has gained over 663 million hours watched in its first season. This makes it the tenth most popular English-language show on the streaming service.*

Season three, released in 2023, received mixed reviews and was met with a drop in viewership. Cavill has previously hinted at his dissatisfaction with the direction of the show, as he detailed his requests to showrunners to stay faithful to the books in an interview with Philstar in 2021. Many viewers have therefore speculated that he left the show due to creative differences.

The release date of the last two instalments of the series has yet to be released. However, the fourth season is currently in production.

Seasons 1-3 of The Witcher are based on The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt from Sapowski’s original fantasy book series. The last two seasons will follow Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake.
